Robert Olsen

Deacon

Robert Olsen

Deacon Bob was born in central California, initially living in what was and still is the very small town of Biola, west of Fresno.  Before starting school his family moved to Galt, another small town, where he would attend school, graduating from Galt High.  When he was eight years old, thanks to neighborhood friends he and his brother were invited to attend St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, where he was confirmed and served as an acolyte.  He attended college at California State University Stanislaus earning a BA in Fine Art.  To beat the draft during the Vietnam War he enlisted for Army OCS and then forgot to get out for 20 years, serving at various post in the United States, Korea and Germany.  While in the military he received his MS in Systems Management from the University of Southern California.  While in the service he was licensed as a Lay Reader and Chalice Bearer (now Worship Leader and EM).  After retiring from the Army, he and his wife Sandy and their son’s moved to the Sacramento area and began attending St. George’s.  After retiring from the military he initially worked for a housing developer and then for twenty years the State of California in various position, from analyst to Hearing Officer, in the Social Security Administration Disability Program.  (If you have a half hour to kill, he can try to explain why as a Calif State employee he was doing SSA disability work).  During that time he felt a calling to ordained ministry, but not as a priest, rather as a vocational Deacon.  After attending the School for Deacons for 3 years and obtaining a BA in theological Studies, he graduated and was ordained a Deacon on July 28, 2001, beginning his service at St. George’s.
